Sparks Marina Walking Path Closed For Pipeline Project

A construction project at the Sparks Marina, specifically on the stretch between the marina and the highway near Harbor Cove Court.

Officials say this project has been in the works for a few years now, the Pipeline Project is in place to improve functionality of the marina. When storms come around there could be a mass amount of overflow water that may pose a threat to flooding the marina area, this project will help prevent that.

Around the marina, is the pipelines and 2 pump station that it possesses, allowing workers to manage storm water and send it back to the river.

Kevin Porter, the Utility Manager for the City of Sparks explains further "It also allows us to be proactive when we know we have big storms coming in so we can move water proactively out of the marina."

Porter adds, that way when the river fills up they'll be able to help prevent flooding , and they wont have to put more water in the river when it shouldn't be there.

Porters says "It moves ultimately from the marina, to what's called the People's Ditch, to the North Truckee drain and ends up in the Truckee River near Larkin's Circle."

This project will not only help with functionality at the marina, but also add some beautification to an area everyone enjoys.

Porter adds "We've been watching our infrastructure closely, and we've seen some deterioration that's taken place over the last 5 to 10 years."

He says now they're at the phase where the construction is nearing completion, and they hope to have it halfway open during the Thanksgiving holiday. By then everyone will be able to enjoy some of the newer features.

Porter tells us more "Those retaining walls were old rockery walls, they've really deteriorated and fallen apart, and we replaced them with newer block type walls."

He adds, that they're really excited for the opportunity to beautify the path for the citizens who often utilize it.

Porter says "We're very excited for the opportunity to construct this project, it gives us that ability to manage the storm water that comes into the marina ultimately getting it to the Truckee River."

What might feel like an inconvenience now, will make a massive positive impact in the long run.

Porter also says before after the construction hours of 7 a.m. to  5 pm., and on the weekend, the path will open back up for public use.
