Animal shelters in our region are seeing an influx of animal surrenders and pets who need re-homing.
The SPCA of Northern Nevada says that they are also seeing an influx of animals, but they are not at full capacity.
While they still have some room, they will be helping some of their partner shelters in other cities that are at full capacity.
"Travel out to Elko and Winnemucca, and Lassen County as well. We pull from those shelters and that is how we fill our shelter with animals. We see a major influx of owner surrenders there and strays," said Karrie Wirth, Director of Operations for the SPCA.
The SPCA says they are seeing lower adoption rates in Washoe County and other counties as well.
Karrie Wirth says that higher cost of living, increasing medical costs for pets, and landlord restrictions for renters are contributing to this.
To help lower the number of animals in shelters, the SPCA is starting a new promotion that will last for the rest of the year.
"We've taken some donation funds and we have chosen to waive fees for seniors, active military, veterans and active teachers as well to come in and for your adoption, your fee is waived," said Karrie Wirth.
The SPCA also works with the Bissell Foundation for the Empty the Shelter program.Â
This program will last until the end of July and features $20 adoption fees for adult cats and $50 adoption fees for adult dogs.
The SPCA also offers spay and neuter programs, a vaccine clinic, behavior help and more.
The SPCA is open for adoptions every day from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and you are able to see what dogs and cats are available for adoption on their website.
