On Mother's Day, thousands of people laced up for the Pinocchio's Moms on the Run 5K event.

The event provides financial support for women diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer.

Many people were extremely happy to be there and for some, seeing the community come together like this was inspiring.

"I am so overwhelmed by seeing the groups of people out here and all of the supporters who support this cause. You know nobody should ever have to go through cancer, let alone the ones who already do, and I just think I will be doing this for years," said Wendy Smith.

Participants in the 5K had the choice to run or walk.

The organization uses the donations collected to assist 50 to 60 women per month with monthly expenses such as rent or groceries, to help offset medical expenses or lost wages.

Many people say they hope to continue supporting Pinocchio's Moms on the Run in the fight against cancer, especially those who have beaten the disease.

"They gave me this cash stipend that was enough to pay my rent each month and to actually get groceries and pay my bills, so they really helped keep me afloat at a tough time and as soon as I started getting better, I've been doing it every year to try and pay it back forward," said Jessie Ebbe.
