Virginia City hosted its 42nd annual 'Chili on the Comstock' cook off on Sunday.
Over 25 different chili cooks competed with the hopes of earning a spot at the International Chili Society World Championships.
There were many experienced cooks at the event, which is why one competitor says this weekend has brought out the best of him and his family.Â
"The competitive nature that I have, I like to win. And anytime I get recognized for it, I feel good, my wife feels good. I have in-laws from Washington. They came all the way down from the state of Washington to help us out. My sister's involved, my son is involved," said David Brearley with DPD Barbeque.
The competition features three main categories.
Traditional Chili, Home Style Chili with beans or pasta, and Chili Verde.
For some cooks, this was their first time ever entering this contest, and for others, this has been a tradition for over 40 years.
One group says that events like these are what keeps historical cities like Virginia City alive and well.
"I think it brings in more of the historical vibe that Nevada has been so well known for and Virginia City moreso. It's just a huge experience for all of us to have the regulars come up and have our locals come up and support our events," said Sheina Olivera.
Many competitors say they are already looking forward to participating in next year's event, so they can continue sharing their chili with new people.
