A deadly hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship that visited Antarctica has highlighted a growing tourism trend. Visits to the southern continent are soaring as advances in shipbuilding couple with fears among visitors that the icy landscapes may melt away due to climate change. Visitor numbers are still small, in part due to the cost and time it can take to get there. But they are growing so fast that scientists and environmentalists are warning of an increase risk of contamination by humans as more and more tourists break the isolation of Antarctica.
