Hurricane Polo lashed Baja California, Mexico, with powerful winds and flash flooding. The Category 2 hurricane struck early Tuesday near Las Barrancas, bringing maximum sustained winds of 110 mph. By mid-day Tuesday, Polo made a second landfall and weakened to become a tropical storm as it moved inland through the Mexican state of Sonora after crossing the Gulf of California. Meanwhile bands of rain continued to sweep across the U.S. Southwest. Desert rivers surged and usually dry arroyos raged with floodwater. Nearly all of the region is under flood watches as tropical weather spreads northeast from Mexico.
