Regents Could Soon Appoint UNLV's Next President

(AP) - Officials are calling for the reorganization for the Clark County School District by August 2017.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that a consultant hired to oversee the reorganization has drafted a plan that would create individual precincts at all 357 schools much faster than originally planned. The consultant says the quick turnaround would prevent opponents from blocking the effort.

Gov. Brian Sandoval signed a bill into law last year that called for studying the possibility of breaking up the Clark County School District by the 2018-19 school year. Longtime Canadian educator Michael Strembitsky has dragged a plan that would fast-track that effort. The Nevada Legislature has until Jan. 1 to approve a final reorganization plan.

Supporters of the reorganization say it will increase local control of schools, but detractors say it could negatively impact minority neighborhoods.
