This is one of the bigger and more chaotic events in downtown Reno with people flooding the streets to celebrate the new year.

Many people celebrate with alcohol or other things and so Reno Police will be working overtime through the night.

Police obviously have more officers on duty, and not just downtown, all across the city because people are celebrating throughout the area.

But downtown is the priority with the biggest party in the city.

“We'll start bringing in staffing throughout the day increasing, around 9 o' clock we'll have our max staffing on for the evening and we'll keep that until about 3 or 4 in the morning,” says Lt. Robert Larson.

Lieutenant Larson says it's a pretty family-friendly atmosphere, but there are people who end up drinking to much for their own good and get into trouble.

"Climbing poles, doing strange things," Larson says. "So we try to spot that behavior we try to see it beforehand and try to eliminate it before they create a problem, before they commit a crime. We're trying to do them a service and keep them safe as well."

If you walked down Virginia Street today you probably noticed the signs and barriers are already out waiting to be put in place.

RPD shuts down the road and Reno Public Works is setting up signs and barriers.

As you heard expect those closures around 7 o clock tonight, and they'll be up until about 8 o clock tomorrow morning.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe says due to high winds predicted for Monday night, the fireworks and NYE activities have been canceled.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is also changing its plans for the evening -

Today we are experiencing very high winds (gusts on the ridges have clocked in at 124mph today), extremely cold temperatures (wind chill is below zero) and icy conditions on Mountain Run. Due to all these factors, our Mountain Operations team has made a few changes to the Torchlight Parade this evening. Here's what's changed:

The Funitel will no longer operate past 4pm this evening
Exhibition Chairlift will be open from 5-6:30pm for all pre-registered participants to take a lap down (from Mid Station only) with LED torches
Skiers & riders who are pre-registered need to pick up their wristband in the Event Registration office (near Wildflour Bakery in the Olympic House)
Participants must show their wristband in order to load Exhibition
Torches will be passed out at the Exhibition chairlift
Please note: Temperatures are very cold and the sun will be down, so please dress warmly!!!
