Forest Thinning Begins on North Shore of Lake Tahoe

The Nevada Division of Forestry is scheduled to conduct a prescribed burn in Little Valley in late September/early October. A community meeting will be held Thursday night for residents.

A spokeswoman says the burn is important because there has been no fire in that valley in over a century, so the fuel reduction is considered critical for forest health and to wildfire threat reduction.

The Nevada Division of Forestry, in cooperation with the University of Nevada, Reno, will conduct the prescribed burn in the Whittell Forest, located on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada in Little Valley, about three miles west of Washoe Lake and 2 ½ miles northeast of Lake Tahoe.

The community meeting will be held Thursday, September 8th at 6:00 pm at the Washoe Valley Volunteer Fire Department. The meeting will explain to residents the various aspects of the burn, general forest health, fuel reduction goals, the operational plan, research projects associated with the burn and to answer questions from residents.
