Nevada Republicans are proposing a bill repealing the state's requirement for concealed gun permits.
Republican Sen. Don Gustavson is leading a group of Republican legislators supporting Senate Bill 143, which is scheduled for a hearing Wednesday in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The bill seeks to make Nevada the sixth state to approve laws allowing for open and concealed carry of firearms without a permit. Nevada already allows open carry of a gun without a permit.
Gustavson said the majority of gun owners are responsible and don't need additional training. He said the majority of sheriffs and police agencies support the bill.
Las Vegas police lobbyist Chuck Callaway said the department opposes the proposal because it adds uncertainty for responding officers and that concealed weapon holders need additional training. (AP)
