Butte County Deputies say a high school student faces charges for making terrorist threats after allegedly posting a threatening message on Snapchat.
Authorities say the video showed what appeared to be a hunting style rifle with scope, an MP40 machine gun and semiautomatic pistol on a bed. Though the video did not contain any verbal threats, deputies say it contained a caption implying a possible shooting.
Deputies say they learned of the video late Tuesday night and interviewed the person shown in the cell phone video. They say that person, a former Las Plumas High School student, told deputies the firearms were actually BB guns and a pellet gun. They say he sent that video of him bragging about his pellet gun and BB guns to the 16-year-old. The video he sent did not contain the alleged threatening caption.
Deputies say they then contacted the teen, a current student of the high school, who told authorities he added the caption on the original video and “shared it on Snapchat as a joke.” Deputies say the teen “did not have any intentions to shoot anyone and was remorseful about his actions.”
The teen was subsequently arrested and booked into the Butte County Juvenile Hall on a terrorist-related charge.
