The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says the Spooner Lake area in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park will be closed from September 12th to November 16th.

They said the area is increasingly susceptible to environmental disturbances that is threatening the health of the Tahoe Basin.

Alongside the Nevada Division of Forestry, the Nevada Division of State Parks and the Nevada Division of State Lanes, the project will include selective removal of trees which will be flown via helicopter to a log landing and transported out of the Tahoe Basin. This is to help increase the forest's resilience to events like wildfires, epidemic populations of bark beetles and drought.

The Spooner Lake Trail and Tahoe Rim Trail will be closed for public safety.

“As a natural wonder beloved by Nevada residents and visitors alike, protecting and enhancing Spooner Lake’s vibrant natural surroundings remain a top priority among numerous federal, state, local, and private partners,” said Bradley Crowell, Director of the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. “By implementing forward-looking strategies, together with our partners, we will continue protecting Lake Tahoe from threats to the ecosystem.”
