Stronger Job Outlook Anticipated for Fall University Graduates

1,400 University of Nevada students are set to graduate on Saturday, and because they are graduating during the fall, some grads will have some advantages in the workforce.

“They are entering the job market at a good time,” said Mary T. Calhoon, Career Education Coordinator at the University. “There is less competition, and more companies have needs. This is a good time to graduate.”

A total of 1,475 degrees, made up of 1,094 bachelor's degrees and 381 advanced degrees or certificates (master's and doctoral degrees), will be awarded. Winter 2013 had 1,461 students get degrees. On average, there are over 2,000 undergraduate degrees awarded during the spring commencement.

“If I graduated in December, I would have less competition for other students who are graduating than in May because it's a much larger group," said Brittany Dybdahl, an anthropology major.

Calhoon says the job outlook, whether a person has undergraduate or graduate degree, is promising.

“Employers report they plan to hire about 9% more graduates from the class of 2014 than the previous year,” said Calhoon.

Public parking is available in the West Stadium Parking Complex, directly north of Lawlor Events Center, as well as the Brian J. Whalen Parking Complex. The 15th Street entrance to campus, off Virginia Street, will close at 7 a.m. and will be accessible for special guests and media parking only.
