Summer Swimming Safety, Recognize Warning Signs of 'Secondary Drowning'

With summer in full swing, local pools and waterways are seeing a lot more action; but before you dive in, remember safety first. We spoke with an ER doctor about a phenomenon commonly known as 'secondary drowning.'

The official medical term for the instance is call a 'submersion injury.' It happens when somebody inhales water while swimming, seems fine afterward, but then later experiences a type of 'delayed drowning' long after they have left the water. 

KTVN spoke with Dr. Jennifer Wilson, Medical Director for St. Mary's Emergency Department, about what warning signs you should look out for.
