Regional agencies held a press briefing on Wednesday to update the public on the county's COVID-19 response.
Wednesday's press briefing comes one day after Governor Steve Sisolak ordered all non-essential businesses to close for the next 30 days, which elected leaders agree with.
"It's quick, short-term actions like these that I believe will best combat long-term effects to our health, well-being and economy," Bob Lucey, Washoe County Commission Chair said.
Lucey again stressed residents to stay home and to use social distancing, staying six feet apart from others. Even the representatives who participated in the press conference stood apart. Officials are asking everyone to look out for each other as we go through this ordeal.
"Be kind to one another, check your neighbors, help those in need by calling them and asking them what they may need," Ed Lawson, Sparks Mayor Pro Tempore said. "If you're able to do so, drop off some necessities such as food, medical supplies, toilet paper and whatever else might be needed."
A major concern is for the nonessential businesses that have to shut down for the next 30 days. Reno, Sparks and Washoe County say they are going to step up patrols to protect closed businesses from the possibility of break-ins and looting.
"I want to assure our community that just because businesses are closed, your public safety is not," Deputy Chief Oliver Miller, Reno Police Department said.
"We will be looking at those businesses and making sure we protect them and reassuring the community that we have their best interest and safety at heart and their businesses that'll be closed down," Sheriff Darin Balaam said.
As of now, Washoe County has 12 confirmed cases of coronavirus.
Chairman Lucey mentioned that RTC buses will run for now.
The best ways for people to reduce their risk of getting sick, and preventing COVID-19 are:
* Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
* Cough or sneeze into your sleeve, or tissue
* Avoid touching your face
* Stay home if you are sick
* Try alternatives to shaking hands, like an elbow bump
* There is no recommendation to wear masks at this time to prevent yourself from getting sick
* If possible, work from home
* Reconsider traveling
* Go outside as much as possible
* Avoid non-essential social gatherings
County officials stressed not to call 911, unless it is a life-threatening issue.
