The Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation hosted its second 'Canoe the Slough' event this past weekend, offering attendees a rare opportunity to explore the Rosewood Nature Study Area by boat.
The event allowed participants to launch kayaks into the slough for a morning of paddling through the wetland, an activity typically prohibited throughout the rest of the year.
Attendees traveled quietly through the area’s native vegetation, observing wildlife such as muskrats, ducklings, and a pelican flying overhead.
Bird calls, including those of Virginia rails and killdeer, added to the natural experience as participants made their way to and from the launch site.
The event served as a fundraiser for Phase II of the Rosewood Capital Campaign.
According to the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, more than half of the fundraising goal has already been met.
Planned improvements include an expanded outdoor classroom, a new amphitheater-style meeting area, a pollinator garden gazebo, ten interpretive signs, directional signs, and mile markers.
Support from Natural Grocers and Sprouts helped provide food and drinks to participants. The Natural Grocers store in Reno contributed to the fundraiser as part of its community outreach mission, which includes promoting nutrition and offering free health-focused classes.
The foundation encourages those interested in supporting the Rosewood Nature Study Area to donate, become members, or schedule tours. More information is available at www.tmparksfoundation.org.
