As boating activity picks up for the summer, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents and visitors about rules that limit how long boats, trailers, recreational vehicles and oversized vehicles may be parked on public streets.

Under Washoe County Code 70.391, boats, trailers, and recreational vehicles may be parked on a public street for up to 48 hours for loading and unloading, as long as all other traffic and parking laws are followed.

After 48 hours, a boat or trailer left parked or stored on a public street, highway, or alley may be subject to enforcement and towing.

The Sheriff's Office also reminded people that boats and trailers should not be stored long-term on public roadways and that the 48-hour allowance is only for loading and unloading.

Boats or trailers that block traffic, sidewalks, intersections, crosswalks, or driveways, or otherwise create a safety issue, may be subject to additional enforcement under Washoe County Code 70.392.

Commercial trailers or semitrailers that are not attached to a tractor or motor vehicle may not be parked on public streets, highways, alleys or parking lots.

If a boat or trailer is on private property, the Sheriff's Office does not have jurisdiction to remove it solely as a parking issue. In those cases, residents should contact Washoe County Code Enforcement for assistance.

Additional information about abandoned vehicles is available through the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said increased boating activity at Lake Tahoe during the summer makes it important to keep roadways safe, clear and accessible for residents, visitors and emergency responders.
