Crosswalk

The Reno Police Department's Traffic Division with a grant provided by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, issued 75 traffic citations and gave 21 warnings during a pedestrian safety operation during June.

Five officers handled the operation in designated pedestrian safety zones in the downtown area and areas of high pedestrian traffic

Police focused their efforts on drivers and pedestrians who were violating laws that enhance pedestrian safety.

Nevada state law requires pedestrians to use sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian bridges and obey all traffic-control signs and signals.

If there is no sidewalk, pedestrians must walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic.

For motorists, they must yield to pedestrians and avoid passing vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.

A good rule of thumb for all is to, “Look Up, Look Out.”

The Reno Police Department, Nevada Department of Public Safety, and the Office of Traffic Safety would like to remind drivers and pedestrians to share the roadways, stay alert be aware of their surroundings and follow the laws designed to protect all roadway users.
