Travel will be touch and go this week as another storm rolls through the Sierra late Tuesday through Thursday. Snow totals will be higher south of I-80 where over several inches of snow could fall above 7000’. A foot of snow is possible in the high Sierra around Tahoe as well. Lake Tahoe could see between 2-5 inches by Thursday night.

There are two different rounds to this storm. The first one coming in from the south Tuesday night into Wednesday, and the second one early Thursday. The second round will be colder, but more scattered or spotty. The first round will be slightly warmer and more widespread.

A Winter Weather Advisory is posted for the Tahoe Basin from 4am Wednesday through 10pm Thursday night, where 2-6 inches of snow could fall below 7000’ and 6-12 inches above. This includes places like Incline Village, Truckee, and South Tahoe. The Central Sierra Snow Lab could see around a foot as well.

The Winter Weather Advisory for northeast California, including Susanville and Portola, could see 2-7 inches of snow above 5000’. Mammoth Lakes could see 6-12 inches by Thursday night above 8000’.

Winter Weather Advisories are also posted for eastern Nevada through 4am Friday.

More rain than snow will fall in the Truckee Meadows this week, but light snowfall could accumulate on roadways for both the Wednesday and Thursday morning commute. The snow level will be around 5000’ on Wednesday and 4500’ on Thursday. While the snow level drops Thursday morning, the precipitation will be more scattered, with some of us staying dry.

The foothills could see some snow Wednesday morning, but closer to the airport and downtown Reno will only see rain. Snow totals in western Nevada will range from 2-5 inches in Virginia City, to up to a few inches in the foothills of west Reno. This is the combined total from Wednesday and Thursday. Snow is more likely Thursday morning than Wednesday. The airport will get between a dusting to a couple inches.

Moderate to heavy rain showers will develop in central and eastern Nevada on Wednesday. Fallon, Dayton, Lovelock, and Yerington will see more rain than Carson City and Reno this week. Rain totals will be less than a quarter of an inch in the Truckee meadows, but could see half an inch of rain in the Basin and Range. Friday will be dry with clearing skies.
