Lyon County is reporting a death, and 35 positive COVID tests at Mason Valley Residence senior living facility.

"We tested positive. They just told us today. Everyone's scheduled to stay in their rooms," said Mason Valley Residence Swing Shift Supervisor Quintella Haggard. "These people are like family and that's just how it is," said Mason Valley Residence Swing Shift Supervisor Ashley Anne Tom.

A total 34 residents and staff at Mason Valley Residence in Yerington have tested positive for COVID-19. That's out of 53 tests taken last week.

Some members of the staff are not happy with how the process went down. "We got our PPE on October 1 and they came in and gave us our tests on the October 2nd," said Haggard.

Some employees say they've been living at the location since that time, and continuing to work. "We have been staying here since then, because we didn't want to bring the stuff home," said Haggard.

Lyon County has more than 450 reported cases, this new outbreak equals around 8% of that total.

Still, officials feel they have the outbreak under control. "Mobility of these people isn't the greatest. So the fact that it's in a senior living facility, is less concerning than if it was the jail or the hospital. That's where you have a captive audience, but they have more freedom to move around," said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page.

Page says the conditions of facility occupants and workers is a concern. "If they are 83, physically active and healthy that's one thing. If they are 83 of age, and they are have underlying health issues that weakens their immune system, that's another thing," said Page.

Page says at least one person from the facility died from COVID last week. "They're more than residents to us. They are more like family. They are like our grandparents. I've been here 4 years taking care of the people who are here, and we just have to watch them die," said Haggard.

2 News reached out to Mason Valley Residence for comment, and have not heard back yet. Officials say contact tracing is underway, and the county is asking anyone who may have been at that facility to call Carson City Health and Human Services to help with the process.
