UPDATE: Truckee Police are being recognized by PETA for their bear cub rescues over the past couple of months.

Truckee Police posted a video on November 16 of two officers lifting the lid of a dumpster so a trapped bear cub could escape.

In October they posted a video of them rescuing another bear cub that was trapped inside a truck.

"These compassionate officers made sure that this little cub escaped a frightening and life-threatening predicament," says PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien. "PETA encourages everyone to follow their example and come to the aid of animals in distress—especially in winter, when a scarce food supply can lead wildlife into dangerous situations."

The Truckee Police Department will receive a framed certificate from PETA and a box of vegan cookies.

The Truckee Police Department wants to remind the public to lock up all garbage containers because of bear activity.

They said in just a few weeks time, they have had two bear rescues.

On Friday morning, a Sergeant rescued a bear cub from a dumpster after the lid fell closed. Citizens nearby saw the momma bear trying to free the cub and called Truckee Police.

Sgt. Mon Pere and Officer Donahue from Truckee Police were able to free the cub while the momma bear waited on a hill nearby.
