University of Nevada Expands Housing as Enrollment Grows

For the first time ever, the University of Nevada, Reno could not house all of the students who requested a place to live for this fall semester. However, one project is already helping to alleviate that problem, and it's specifically for graduate students.

Construction crews have finished work of a new student housing project, Ponderosa Village, just in time for the new school year.

The first residents moved into the complex located on Evans Ave. August 1.

“It is serving a need that we had,” said Jerry Marczynski with Student Life Services. “We didn't have good graduate housing. We replaced University Villas that was here on this site. That had 41 units and built in the 1960's. It was time to replace them.

It has 132 units which Nevada housing officials say provide convenient and safe on campus living options. It is also pet friendly.

Enrollment at the university keeps increasing, and that is why the school needs more housing options.  Both Manzanita and Lincoln Halls will close next fall; however, University of Nevada staff say a new dorm, Peavine Hall, will open next summer.

Peavine Hall, a dormitory for undergraduate students is able to accommodate 400 students.

These new dorms will also attract students from other areas

This will help grow the graduate school too,” said Marczynski. “One thing that is important bringing in graduate students outside the area in is good housing.”
