A group of concerned citizens gathered at Pickett Park Saturday morning to 'bring love,' and to hand out supplies to the homeless that frequent the park.
This comes after a local group called "Quality of Life Reno"Â posted a flier saying on Saturday they were going to make citizen's arrests of those living in Pickett Park illegally.Â
The group canceled their Saturday plans after the Reno Police Department went to the park on Friday to offer other resources.
Saturday morning, the park was filled with people who brought donations. The message they were trying to give was to spread love over hate according to volunteers who came out to Pickett Park Saturday.
The original thought was to come out to protest against the citizens arrest that Quality of Life Reno was intending, but it turned into something else entirely.
"We heard that there was going to be a group coming down to perform citizens arrest on the population of the park. As a reaction to that we wanted to come down and do the exact opposite," says Aelxander Alcantar a concerned community member.
"This does bring tears to my eyes, it's so beautiful. I mean this all happened two days ago, we were notified on Facebook that hey we need to go spread love. The bad guys didn't show up, but the love did. I am really proud of my little town," says Ed Disney, a concerned community member.
One man who came out to volunteer says Saturday's event hit close to home.
"It means a lot, I was homeless years ago and when someone bullies the homeless like this other organization is doing, um it really tugs a heart string. You know some of the people out here, are not out here by choice," says Tony Jacobs a concerned community member.
Volunteers also packed bags to bring to homeless camps near by.
"I can't believe the people we must have 100 people here, and every table is full of food on the floor with bags waiting to be filled," says Disney.
Volunteers say today wasn't about them, it was simply to show people who may be homeless that someone cares.
We spoke to Paul White with Quality of Life Reno to get his side of the story, and here's what he had to say:
"We find the behavior of those protesting ill-informed, self-righteous, and vulgar. Which is the opposite of the virtues they proclaim."
