Volunteers Sought for Upcoming Trauma Training

From the Trauma Intervention Program of Northern Nevada:

The Trauma Intervention Program of Northern Nevada (TIP) provides citizen volunteers on a 24/7/365 basis to assist those who have experienced a traumatic event. TIP volunteers are called upon by emergency responders such as police, fire, or medical staff, within the first few hours following an incident, to provide emotional & practical support to those affected by the tragedy. Although TIP has responded to many major incidents in our community, such as the Reno Air Races crash, Caughlin & Washoe Drive fires, IHOP shooting, & most recently the Sparks Middle School shooting, the fact is TIP volunteers most often respond to the daily disasters; natural deaths, suicides, drowning, auto accidents, etc.

TIP information night is scheduled for November 6, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Guest speakers will share their TIP experience, giving potential trainees the opportunity to learn more about this amazing program. Volunteer training begins immediately following the introduction on November 6th. This 36-hour training, spanning two weeks, will be held at the Regional Public Safety Training Center. Training includes lectures, demonstrations, role-playing & guest speakers. No prior experience is required to participate in the program. Applicants must be at least 16-years-old, possess a valid driver's license, & have a cell phone. All trainees are subject to a background investigation. Spanish speaking volunteers are needed.

“You don't need to be a mental health professional to provide emotional support,” advises Gabrielle Totton, Executive Director for TIP of N. Nevada. “Learning a little ‘uncommon' sense & how to simply be there for someone makes all the difference in the world to a family who just lost a child,” Totton says.

TIP is a national non-profit organization founded in 1985 with 16 affiliates in more than 250 cities across the nation. TIP received National recognition with an Innovations Award in State & Local Government from Harvard University & the Ford Foundation, the Crime Victim Service Award from the U.S. Justice Department, the Governor's Victim Service Award from the State of California, & the Paul H. Chapman Award for the Improvement of Justice. Locally, TIP was recognized as the 2012 Non-Profit of the Year by Reno-Sparks-Northern Nevada Chamber as well as being awarded the 2011 Governor's Points of Light Award for Volunteer Manager of the Year.
