Washoe County School District Celebrates National Public Schools Week

The Washoe County School District is celebrating National Public Schools Week.

This week is dedicated to highlighting public schools for all they do for their students.

We went to Greenbrae Elementary School Tuesday, to talk with students and teachers about public schools.

Students over at Greenbrae Elementary School are taught to always be their best.

"Public school is all about making sure our students have the best education possible. We want our students to graduate, become productive citizens," says WCSD Interim Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill.

Dr. Kristen McNeill says what makes a great public school is their dedication to their students.

"We have about 8,000 employees that wake up every morning wanting the absolute best for our students. Greenbrae Elementary is a great example of that. The administration, the leadership, counselors, teachers, they're all here for one reason and that's for the students," says McNeill.

Students I spoke too say they owe it all to their teachers for being such positive role models in their lives.

"They're good teachers and they've always taught me not to give up on myself," says Fifth Grade Student, Jahzara Morin.

"I've been here since Kindergarten and I just love the teachers because they show you so much. They just teach you what you need to know, and they help you along the way," says Fifth Grade Student, Pablo Saenz.

Pablo Saenz says his experience at Greenbrae is inspiring him to become an instructor himself in the future.

So college people I want to teach them, I don't want the money, I just want to teach people," says Saenz.

Dr. McNeill says their number one priority is making sure they're meeting the needs of all of their 64,000 students in the district.
