Original Story: The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees is scheduled to discuss many topics including the District budget, school naming, and zoning at its Tuesday afternoon meeting.
• Budget: Although the District is still determining the impact of the COVID-19 situation for the upcoming school year, the District is required to submit its final budget for Fiscal Year 2020-21 by June 8. Chief Financial Officer Mark Mathers will present the Final Budget, the second consecutive balanced budget for the District, to the Board of Trustees during the meeting.
• School Naming: Trustees are scheduled to discuss the new elementary school being constructed in Cold Springs. The three names recommended for consideration by the School Naming Committee are: Michael Inskeep Elementary School; White Lake Elementary School; and Sessions S. “Buck” Wheeler Elementary School.
• Zoning for Schools in North Valleys: The Board members are also scheduled to discuss zoning boundaries for the new elementary school in Cold Springs when it opens in school year 2021-2022. Changes in the Cold Springs area necessitate zoning discussions involving several other north valleys schools including, but not limited to, Silver Lake Elementary School.
• Zoning for new Procter R. Hug High School: Trustees will discuss establishing the zoning boundary for the new school. The proposed boundary would include all students who attend the current Hug High School campus, as well as a section of students who attend Spanish Springs High School. The new campus will help alleviate overcrowding at Spanish Springs High School, and any changes would go into effect during the 2022-2023 school year, when the new school opens.
• Phase 3 Construction: Additionally, the Board will consider taking action on Phase 3 of the construction of the new Procter R. Hug High School with Clark/Sullivan Construction. This contract for $129 million came in well under budget due to excellent competition with more than 90 percent proposed to local subcontractors. This would be the largest single contract WCSD has ever awarded.
