KNPB Shines Spotlight on Career, Technical Education Programs

From the Washoe County School District:

For the fourteenth consecutive year, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) has been recognized for fiscally responsible practices by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The group awarded its Certification of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the WCSD Office of Business & Financial Services in recognition of its award-winning Comprehensive Financial Report (CAFR) for fiscal year ending June 30, 2014.

“We are tremendously proud of our team in Business & Financial Services,” said WCSD Board of Trustees President John Mayer. “They work hard every day to ensure that our District manages our public funds to support our mission of providing an outstanding education to each of our 63,000 students, and we appreciate their efforts.”

“This award recognizes not only a great team of experts, but also our commitment as a District to using our taxpayer funding efficiently and effectively,” said Interim Superintendent Traci Davis. “Transparency is critical to our philosophy, and the report compiled by the team is a great example of our ongoing efforts to provide updated, complete information to our community about how we work to support our students.”

The Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by the WCSD administrators and staff.

WCSD will soon unveil the “Data Gallery,” which contains easy-to-access financial data about school construction, repairs, capacity issues, and crowding. The system is interactive and is designed to provide even more extensive accountability and transparency to the community.

“How refreshing it is to see our District and our public schools being managed in such a transparent and effective manner,” David Dehls, past president of the Education Alliance of Washoe County. “It's a pleasure to work with the district on a variety of projects, and I think that receiving this award for 14 straight years shows that our effort and our community support is going to a very good place.”

“Our team works closely with the Board of Trustees, Interim Superintendent Davis, District Leadership, and our schools to manage our finances, and we are gratified to receive this award,” said WCSD Chief Financial Officer Tom Ciesynski. “It's an honor to be recognized by GFOA for the fourteenth year, and we are proud to uphold the standards for excellence set by the Washoe County School District.”
