From the Better Business Bureau:
Better Business Bureau Serving Northern Nevada is alerting consumers about a locksmith business that quotes low but charges big.
Consumer complaints to BBB reveal that Reno Locksmith charges its customers up to four times more than what was originally quoted. Adding to the complainants' frustration is the business does not respond to complaints. Reno Locksmith has an "F" rating with BBB.
Consumers who use untrustworthy locksmiths often complain about being significantly overcharged, being charged for unnecessary services, being intimidated, and not getting a refund or response to their complaint. In the past year, BBB has received 928 complaints against locksmiths in the U.S.
To avoid getting ripped off, BBB recommends consumers follow these tips when hiring a locksmith:
•Find a locksmith before you need one. The worst time to try to research a locksmith is when you're locked out of your house or car. Get recommendations from friends and check the company's BBB Business Review, then save the number in your phone in case of emergency.
•Know the price before agreeing to the work. Though locksmiths may not always know the extent of the job before they start, they should be able to provide a fairly accurate range based on the details you provide.
•Never sign a blank form authorizing work. Ask about additional fees (such as mileage charges, minimum service fees, or late night surcharges) before you authorize the locksmith to do the work.
•Check the permit. Locksmiths are required to carry a permit, issued by the county sheriff, anytime they are on the job. Even if you have researched the company beforehand, ask to see the individual's permit when he or she arrives.
•Make sure the locksmith has insurance coverage in case there is damage to your home or vehicle.
•Pay by credit card in the event you want to dispute the charge.
•Contact BBB for a company's BBB Business Review by calling (775) 322-0657 or going to bbb.org.
