CAMO is a program in Reno directed for veterans that have been charged with a misdemeanor.
It aims to support veterans and their families through court; 4 out of 25 veterans graduated today. The program is really new, in fact today was its first graduation.
Organizers say the goal is to reduce addiction, improve life stability and increase compliance with treatment.
“The biggest thing that comes through this program, is that through the act of participating on the program they are helping themselves become more independent and they are helping themselves get back to a sober safe environment again,” says Shane Whitecloud a mentor at CAMO.
The program lasts from 12 to 18 months. During that time veterans go through counseling and self-help.
During that time veterans have to remain sober and if they don't follow the guidelines they can be expelled. Those participating are usually recommended from other judges. At graduation, court charges are completely removed from their record giving them a second chance.
