An exciting change is coming to the CBS Evening News starting Monday night. That's when former, longtime CBS This Morning Co-Host Norah O'Donnell moves into her new role as anchor and managing editor of the nightly newscast.

Norah O'Donnell is ready to begin a new chapter as anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News.

"It's incredibly exciting and humbling really."

She joins a legacy that includes legendary CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite.

"One of the things he said was journalism is what makes democracy work and I believe that more firmly than ever. I think people are hungry for and craving an independent, fact-based source for news."

O'Donnell grew up in a military family which helped her understand that the news impacts real people.

"The decisions made in Washington from the White House to Congress sending men and women overseas, those mattered personally in our household."

O'Donnell has an extensive background covering politics including as CBS News' Chief White House Correspondent . She says the CBS News team is uniquely positioned to cover the 2020 presidential election.

“You've covered six presidential campaigns, this is going to be one for the ages.”

“Yeah. Our goal for CBS Evening  News is not to follow the news, we're going to break news. There's going to be an urgency, and a set of context depth and clarity like we've never had before.

The two-time Emmy winner has sat down with presidents, princes and CEOs and plans to continue getting the big interviews.

“Why do you think people feel so comfortable in talking to you?”

“Trust. I'm proud of that people feel they can trust me. They know they'll probably get a tough question and that's my job as a journalist to do that but hopefully they know that, that what we do at CBS News is we do it with integrity and trust and that is ultimately how we succeed.”

Norah O'Donnell will follow in the footsteps of Walter Cronkite when she and the CBS Evening News broadcast live from Kennedy Space Center on Tuesday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

You can watch the CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell at 6 p.m. on KTVN.
