There's no denying that serving in Congress has lost a little of its prestige in the eyes of a lot of voters. Mark Amodei has served there for four years now and he says he's well aware that people are annoyed that nothing ever seems to get done.
"They're pissed! I know they are. But that's what they are. They aren't just mad, they are beyond mad and they wonder just what people there are doing," he says.
And he admits that hardly anything is getting done in Washington. He says it's because of the egos there which he classifies into two groups.
"There are the political athletes and there are the issue people and the political athletes are running the place! So it's not whether I can get anything done but whether I can kick your butt politically. Great! And then the issues are still there. Make no mistake about it, if my mental well-being depended on moving bills through the process and passing bills, I would be suicidal!" he says.
Yet he plans to make another run for Congress next year. He says in spite of his frustration, he thinks he can make a difference by representing the interests of the state and if he doesn't do it someone less capable will and he feels responsible. He also says if the conditions are right, he may seek the office of Governor.
"I wouldn't run against Adam (Laxalt). And I wouldn't run against Dean (Heller) but I have always believed that you do the best at the job you have and then if opportunities arise and doors open you take advantage of them as well."
