Firefighters Battle Brush Fire Off Highway 395 Near Red Rock

Fire crews responded to a truck fire that turned into a brush fire off U.S. 395 Northbound near Red Rock Tuesday afternoon around 5 p.m.

The Reno Fire Department says the fire quickly spread south on the highway, growing to five acres. Two dozen homes were threatened over the hillside of the fire. Crews worked to protect the structures and no homes were evacuated.

RFD Fire Chief David Cochran says crews got a line around the fire in about 20 minutes. The truck fire started with hay in the back of the pickup somehow catching fire. That's when the fire increased in size, spreading to nearby brush on the side of the highway.

Smoke could be seen along the highway's travel lanes.

Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Chief Charles Moore says traffic was being diverted at Stead on 395 N to Old North Virginia Street. Southbound traffic was not affected. The Nevada Highway Patrol confirms all lanes have reopened on northbound U.S. 395.

Truckee Meadows volunteers, along with crews from the Reno Fire Department, the Forest Service and BLM assisted in the incident.

According to Cochran, there was no damage or injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Crews continue to mop up.
