A Deputy with the Carson City Sheriff's Office was killed early Saturday morning while responding to a domestic violence call. He has since been identified as Carl Howell.
Governor Sandoval signed an Executive Order on Sunday morning order flags to be lowered to half-staff until sunset on August 22 in remembrance of Deputy Howell.
At 2:18 a.m., the Carson City Sheriff's Office responded to that call in the 4100 Block of Montez Drive in East Carson City. When officers arrived, they found a female with injuries. Howell went to make contact with the shooter, since identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Pope, who appeared to be armed with a firearm. The two exchanged gunfire and both men were struck. Howell was taken to the hospital, Carson-Tahoe Health where he later died. Pope died on the scene.
Sheriff Furlong says three children between the ages of 8 and 13 were taken out of the home and away from the scene.
The Reno Police Department is now investigating the shooting. Anyone with any information on this case is asked to contact the Reno Police Department at (775) 334-2188 or Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900 or text your tip to 847411. Your call will remain anonymous.

A procession of about ten Carson City Sheriff's cars brought the fallen Deputy from the hospital to the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office in Reno Saturday morning. One Deputy in the processional told us that he was "a father, a friend, and a good cop."
The wives of other Carson City Deputies held a candlelight vigil to pay their respects on Saturday night. A large crowd gathered at the Peace Officers Memorial at the Capital Building in Carson City.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, August 20th. The Carson City Sheriff's Office administration functions will be closed on that day to allow employees to participate in the funeral services. Due to the anticipated crowd size, the funeral services will be held at the Reno Events Center, 400 North Center Street, in Reno at 11:00 a.m. Sheriff Furlong apologizes that the services are not able to be held locally.
The procession is expected to begin shortly after 9:00 a.m. Thursday, with the family beginning at Fitzhenry's Funeral Home, continuing past the Carson City Public Safety Complex and the Nevada State Capital, then joining the remainder of the procession at North Carson Street and College Parkway intersection.
Please contact the Carson City Sheriff's Office for information on donations to Deputy Howell's family at (775) 887-2500. The Carson City Deputy Sheriff’s Association has established a memorial fund at Heritage Bank of Nevada. Just ask for the “Carl Howell Memorial Fund” or account # 2000012522.
CCDSA President Don Gibson says, "Carl, you will be greatly missed, always in our hearts and never forgotten by all your brothers and sisters. We have the watch from here, rest in peace our brother. This is a tragic reminder of the sacrifice all officers make as they lay their lives on the line every day in protecting our community."
