Governor's Office to Fill Vacant Lyon County Commissioner Position

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners says the governor's office will start filling its vacant commissioner position starting next month, a few weeks after the death of Commissioner Greg Hunewill.

County Manager Jeff Page says Lyon County has been informed by the Governor's Office that on September 5th commissioners will be asked to pass a resolution declaring a vacancy for District 5 (Yerington, Mason Valley and Smith Valley). 

The resolution will then be filed with the Governor’s Office.

Lyon County say people interested in being appointed must be a registered Republican and must reside in District Five pursuant to NRS 244.040

NRS 244.040  Vacancy in office of county commissioner.

      1.  Any vacancy occurring in any board of county commissioners must be filled by appointment of the Governor. Except in Carson City, the Governor shall appoint a suitable person who is a member of the same political party as the most recent holder of the vacant office.

      2.  The term of office of a person appointed to the office of county commissioner does not, by virtue of the appointment, extend beyond 12 p.m. of the day preceding the first Monday of January next following the next general election.

People meeting the qualifications must complete an appointment application and waiver for the Governor’s Office.

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners does not have authority to appoint a replacement for any open seat on the County Commission. The Governor’s Office will establish any time lines to receive and process applications. Any questions or concerns should be directed to: boards@gov.nv.gov

In a statement Lyon County Manager Jeffery Page announced that County Commissioner Greg Hunewill died on August 19, 2019.

Page says he passed away at the Carson Tahoe Hospital. He adds that Hunewill was dealing with health issues since January of this year.

Hunewill served in District 5 (Yerington, Mason Valley and Smith Valley) since 2014.

Page says Hunewill served as a member of the Nevada Association of Counties Board of Directors, represented Lyon County at the Mason and Smith Valley Conservation Districts, and the Walker River Irrigation District. Commissioner Hunewill had also served as a member of Smith Valley Advisory Board prior to being a County Commissioner.

Funeral arrangements and announcement of services will be announced at a later date.
