UPDATE: One man is facing an open murder charge in connection to a shooting in Smith Valley Thursday night.

Lyon County Deputies say 29-year-old Mathew Strain is in custody, suspected of shooting and killing another man near the intersection of Canal Road and Nevada State Route 338. 

Deputies say Strain was involved in a crash. They say he left the car and walked until he got to a truck driver, later identified as 36-year-old Zachary Sanchez. 

Sanchez got out of his truck and deputies say that's when Strain allegedly shot him. 

Sanchez was pronounced dead on scene. 

Officials say Strain then attempted to steal Sanchez's truck. Lyon County deputies arrived on seen and took Strain into custody. 

He is facing charges of battery with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon and open murder.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Lyon County Sheriff's Office says crews responded to a shooting in Smith Valley on Thursday night.

Officials said it happened in the area where Canal Road and SR-388 merge. They said SR-338 is closed in both directions at Canal Road.

They said one person is dead. The suspect was detained.

The public is asked to avoid the area and watch out for emergency vehicles.
