Melania Trump's Plane Turns Around After Mechanical Failure

First Lady Melania Trump's plane quickly returned to Joint Base Andrews shortly after it took off due to a mechanical issue.

The plane was headed to Philadelphia where First Lady was expected to visit Thomas Jefferson University Hospital as part of her Be Best campaign. She was expected to meet with families affected by neonatal abstinence syndrome and staff of the Maternal Addiction, Treatment, Education and Research program.

No emergency crews were waiting on the tarmac upon arrival. The press on board reported seeing a thin haze of smoke and smelling something burning. They also reported being brought wet towels and told to "hold them over [their] faces if the smell became too strong."

A member of the press pool asked the crew members about the smell was told it was a "malfunctioning comms unit" but the White House has not confirmed that information yet. The smell and smoke dissipated within a few minutes but all the crew, the press, and the First Lady were escorted off the plane.

Mrs. Trump got a new plane and flew to Philadelphia.
