The City of South Lake Tahoe has approved the implementation of a new public safety communications system. The vulnerability of the old one put the public and first responders at risk.

The new radio system is a change first responders have been waiting for. The new system will allow first responders to talk and be heard, something that wouldn't always happen with the older one.

"There are several important buildings in town we get no radio signal right now," says South Lake Tahoe Police Chief David Stevenson.

Between all the trees, buildings and different terrain, the new technology relies on microwave signals and should help with dead spots around the city. The project that will cost $5 million will be ready in a year and a half. First responders say it will bring some peace of mind for those whose duty is to ensure safety.

"If there is any gap of communication with dispatchers and other units, that translates into firefighters' or police officers' safety," says Clive Savacool, South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief.
