A new survey shows Esmeralda County in Nevada is one of the most dangerous in the nation when it comes to deadly car accidents. But, that's a bit misleading since it is based on population.

Autoinsurancecenter.com found in Esmeralda County, there were 0.69 crashes per capita between 1994 and 2013 - or just under 700 crashes per 10,000 residents.

That county is shown in red on the accompanying map - signifying more danger - like many of the other least populous counties in the west.

By comparison there were 16 crashes per 10,000 residents during that same time in Washoe County - shown in green, or considered safest.

Statewide - the survey found there were roughly 21 fatal accidents per 10,000 residents in the Silver State.

Monday we talked to the Nevada Highway Patrol to see what they're doing to reduce this statistic.

"We try to go after the distracted drivers, impaired drivers, drivers not wearing their seatbelts, and hazardous moving violations like failure maintaining your travel lane,” says Sgt. Gabor Visnovitis.

According to the survey, Kenedy County, Texas is the most dangerous in the country per capita... while Nantucket County, Massachusetts is the safest.
