The California Highway Patrol has reported a major crash that happened yesterday on Highway 50 outside of South Lake Tahoe.

According to officials, on Friday 54-year old Joseph Gonzales had parked his Nissan Rogue on the shoulder of Hwy. 50 west of Slippery Ford Road to adjust his tire chains.

The report says a second man, 18-year old Roland Pierce, was approaching the area too quickly for the snowy roads and lost control of his Subaru Impreza. He collided with Gonzales—who was thrown into the air, landing in the road on his back—struck the back corner of the Nissan, then hit the guardrail on the side of the road.

Gonzales was transported to a nearby hospital with major injuries; two other passengers in the Nissan were treated for minor injuries.

All people involved in the crash stayed on scene and waited for emergency responders to arrive.

Officials say that they don't consider impaired driving to be a factor in the crash.
