The South Lake Tahoe City Council has voted to direct staff to discuss possible changes to the city’s ordinance regulating Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs), including removing the requirement for a 150-foot buffer zone around properties.

Other proposed changes include increasing the minimum age for renters to 25.

Since the ordinance took effect, the city has issued approximately 100 VHR permits. The current rules were enacted after a voter-approved measure that would have banned Vacation Home Rentals was declared unconstitutional.

City staff will bring the proposed ordinance revisions back for a first reading at the City Council meeting scheduled for October 21, at 5:30 p.m. If a first reading is held at that time, a second reading would follow on November 4. If approved, the changes would take effect 30 days later, on December 4.

The existing ordinance will remain in effect until the new changes become law.
