The inaugural Tahoe Literary Festival is set to debut on October 11 and 12 at multiple different venues in Tahoe City.

Obi Kaufman

The keynote speaker for the festival is Obi Kaufman, an author and naturalist who will speak about his newest book The State of Fire, Why California Burns.

The fest is open to anyone - it offers a unique opportunity to connect with the vibrant community of authors, aspiring writers, songwriters, poets and journalists who call the area home.

There are a limited number of free tickets available for Tahoe and Truckee high school and college students, and for educators from those schools.

Otherwise, tickets for the festival are $35 for access to all the events, or $15 for only the Kaufman keynote.

The theme of this year's festival is "Spirit of Place," which speaks to the festival's roots in the mountains.

The festival kicks off on October 11 with a free literary open mic night where attendees can enjoy poetry and prose hosted by Scott Green of the Tahoe Poetry Collective. The evening features invited poets and the open mic is open to anyone and for any writing style.

On October 12, there will be a morning keynote with the founders of Wildbound PR. Panels, workshops, and discussions with local journalist, poets and authors follow the morning keynote.

The festival wraps up Saturday night with a Songwriter's Showcase hosted by Will Richardson of Tahoe Institute of Natural Science.
