The Truckee Police Department took to their Facebook page on Tuesday to warn of increased bear activity in the area.

In response to the uptick in activity, police are asking people to take some simple safety measures.

These include locking your car at night and not leaving any food or scented items, including gum or wrappers, inside.

They say bears have a strong sense of smell and can easily break into cars.

Police also recommend securing your home by locking windows and doors and making sure crawl spaces are secured.

They also remind people that it is never a good idea to approach a bear or wildlife.

If a bear has entered your home remain calm and quietly back away to a safe area while being sure to give the bear a clear path to leave.
