Two conjoined historic buildings on Fallon’s main drag are finding new life as the Central Nevada Health District and Churchill County Social Services. It’s an effort to create a one-stop-shop for rural public health resources.

“We hope that (citizens are) able to benefit from this,” Churchill County manager Jim Barbee told 2 News on Thursday. “I mean, there’s resources that are going to be available directly in the community that were available on a smaller scale previously, but their access is going to be improved greatly.”

Prior to Governor Lombardo authorizing the formation of CNHD, rural central Nevada relied on the state for access to public health tools. Health district administrator Daren Winkelman says that made it hard for residents in Fallon, Churchill County, Mineral County, Eureka County, and Pershing County to access services.

“It’s difficult when people have to contact somebody in Reno maybe to get service or find out what’s going on in their community,” he said.

He’s aiming to have the new office space opened by Summer or Fall of 2024.
