At the Summit Christian Church in Sparks Joanna Brockman, a home-school mom with a mission, held the second annual Home-school law enforcement event, with 400 kids from the home-school community participating.
“It all started with my youngest Lincoln," said Brockman.. "He’s six, and we were doing our homeschool curriculum and they showed a career day where the sheriff was in the classroom with a K-9 and he asked 'where can I see a K-9 dog?' And I thought I don’t know... so I called the sheriff and started from there and I just kept calling and every department I talked to said they hadn’t reached the homeschool community.”
In this moment she decided this was a void she needed to fill.
At this special event the kids get to see the impact law enforcement has on our community every day, as well as getting to know their local officers. But it also shows the kids a look inside a possible career path.
Even though some kids may be homeschooled, Brockman agrees that every kid still needs to have the same opportunities that public school kids do, things like experiencing career day.
At the event the kids got to meet 15 different agencies.
“I think it’s really great we had such a great impact last year," said Brockman. "And so many agencies that love to be here that thought ‘hey we aren’t reaching these kids,’ this is a perfect opportunity to show what they’re doing and I’m just so happy everyone was able to come out.”
She adds “I’m going to try and do it every year and hopefully our whole event will keep growing.” She says “It’s important to know our homeschool community here is really big. We have thousands of homeschoolers here. I don’t think parents or maybe soon to be maybe homeschool parents realize the great resources we have here tons of co-ops and things that are going on here and these are the kind of things you can do with your kids.”
