Juneteenth became federal law in 2021, and the City of Reno began observing the day in 2022. During the 2023 legislature, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo signed it into law as an official Nevada State holiday. The Juneteenth holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when the Union army arrived in Texas bearing federal orders proclaiming the end of slavery.
