Even legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese was no match for Swifites at this weekend's box office.
"Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" plummeted nearly 67% in its second weekend, but the $31 million it pulled in still beat Scorsese's critically acclaimed "Killers of the Flower Moon" by a comfortable margin. So it goes with a fan base as enthusiastic as Ms. Swift's.
"The Eras Tour" has so far grossed nearly $130 million in North America and $30 million elsewhere for a global total of more than $160 million.
In second, "Killers of the Flower Moon" pulled in $23 million in its debut frame, with another $21 million coming from international receipts for a worldwide take of $44 million in its first weekend.
That is a respectable total given the film's more adult skewing nature and its towering run time of three and a half hours.
The movie tells the true story of a series of murders committed against Osage Native Americans by white settlers trying to take control of their oil wealth.
Critics have already declared it a masterpiece, and Scorsese can add it to an impressive resume that includes the likes of "Goodfellas," "The Aviator," "Taxi Driver," "The Departed," "Casino" and so very many more.
Audiences have also been receptive, bestowing the film an "A-" average on CinemaScore.
Audience enthusiasm points to "Flower Moon" likely holding well in its second weekend, and it may stick around for a long time as it will doubtlessly garner a lot of awards attention.
In third place, "The Exorcist: Believer" dropped nearly 50% to $5,6 million. The movie has made more than $54 million domestically despite reviews that could charitably be deemed unfavorable.
It has made almost the same amount overseas for a total global gross of nearly $108 million so far.
"PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie" took fourth for the weekend with $4.45 million. The animated family flick has made almost $150 million worldwide so far, with $56 million of that coming from North America and more than $92 million from elsewhere.
In fifth place, the family friendly stop-motion fright flick "The Nightmare Before Christmas" returned to theaters for its 30th anniversary, clearing $4.1 million.
