Demolition of the south bridge for the Arlington Avenue Bridges Project is mostly complete, with crews now clearing debris and dewatering the site to prepare for excavation and construction of the new bridge.
Work on the north bridge continues, with crews preparing for the first concrete pour on the bridge deck next week, weather permitting.
Once cured, the north bridge will provide a critical access route for heavy equipment during the reconstruction of the south bridge.
The project, managed by the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County, replaces two nearly century-old bridges over the Truckee River in Wingfield Park.
The project is designed to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and drivers, while enhancing roadway and utility infrastructure.
The north bridge will have one support pier instead of two, and the south bridge will be a clear-span design with no piers, improving the Truckee River’s flood capacity.
Wingfield Park is closed during construction and is expected to reopen in summer 2026.
Arlington Avenue remains closed between West 1st Street and Island Avenue, with cars detoured to Center Street or Virginia Street northbound, and southbound traffic and pedestrians are being detoured to Sierra Street. Â
The First Street and Island Avenue intersections are also closed, with detour routes available on the project website as seen on the map below.
As part of the $32 million project, 32 new trees and 295 shrubs and plants will be added, though about 15 existing trees will be removed during construction.
Renderings, detour maps, and project updates are available at ArlingtonBridges.com, and people are encouraged to contact the project team with questions via the project website.
Construction is expected to be complete by next summer.
