For many people, spring break starts with a packed car, a group of friends, and a long drive to somewhere new.

But Troopers say the trip itself is only part of the planning.

In an online Facebook post from CHP South Lake Tahoe, they shared a reminder for people getting ready to head out for spring break.

According to CHP, as people get ready to go to various destinations on Spring Break, they offer several tips focused not only on safe driving, but personal safety once people arrive.

The post, labeled SPRING BREAK 2026, included this message:

They say that, along with safe driving tips, remember your personal safety as well.

  • Map Your Route: Inspect your car and buckle up.

  • Watch For Pedestrians: Safety first, pedestrians will be everywhere, and if you are one, follow the rules of the road.

  • Buddy System: Never go out alone; stay with your group at all times and establish a designated meet-up spot.

  • Secure Belongings: Use in-room safes for passports, wallets, and extra cash.

  • Social Media Privacy: Avoid posting photos or checking in to locations in real-time. Post after you have left.

  • Trusted Transportation: Use only authorized taxis or rideshare services. Confirm driver identity and share your ride status with a friend.

  • If You Plan To Drink: Plan, schedule a rideshare, call a taxi, or have someone designated as the sober driver.

  • Trust Your Instincts: If a situation feels unsafe or you feel followed, move to a crowded, public area and seek help.

Troopers say spring break often brings large crowds, unfamiliar places, and late nights, situations where small precautions can make a difference.

The reminder is simple, they say, plan for the drive, but also think about what happens once you get there.
