Fraudulent water bills requesting past-due payments from Carson City water customers have caught the attention of Carson City officials.
The Carson City Treasurer's Office and Carson City Utility Billing are reminding customers that the city does not collect payments via email, whether it be for regular, outstanding or delinquent payments.
When the city has to send notices to water customers, the notices are sent in printed from from the Carson City Treasurer's Office and then sent by regular first-class mail through the USPS.
The fraudulent emails may appear to be legitimate, but are missing detailed information that an actual notice would provide, such as:
The customer's complete account number and identification number (which is not a matter of public record)
The parcel ID number
The name of the actual person who is responsible for the service
The actual mailing address for the water bill (which can differ from the service address)
The scammers use tactics of intimidation and pressure to get people to send them money through the threat of additional fees or interruptions in service.
Carson City wants to remind utility customers that they do not turn off water/utility service for any outstanding amounts owed, and will not interrupt or threaten your service with this type of action.
If you receive a questionable email and have questions, you can reach out to the Carson City Treasurer's Office at (775) 887-2092 or email them at treasurer@carson.org.
