A new Earth Month effort in Reno is giving people a simple way to clean out their homes while helping others and reducing waste.
Junk King Reno and the Katie Grace Foundation are launching a month-long donation event series, held every Wednesday in April at 250 Chism St., where people can drop off items to be reused, repurposed, or handled responsibly instead of going to local landfills.
“This partnership is about making it easier for people to do the right thing with the items they no longer need,” said Elliot Levey, owner of Junk King Reno. “We’re creating a system that keeps usable materials out of the landfill and puts them directly back into the community where they can make a difference.”
The weekly events begin on Wednesday, April 1, and include Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, offering a way for people to take part in sustainability efforts while supporting families in need. Donations can include clothing, shoes, electronics, and household goods.
“Earth Month is about action, and this is a simple way for people to get involved,” said Kimberly Weingartner, founder of the Katie Grace Foundation. “With Junk King’s support, we’re able to reach more people, collect more resources, and make a bigger impact, especially as we celebrate Earth Day together.”
The event series also marks the start of a new partnership between the two organizations, aimed at expanding efforts across Reno, Sparks, and surrounding areas. Organizers said the goal is to increase access to resources, reduce waste, and strengthen support systems in the community.
While the Katie Grace Foundation already hosts regular Wednesday donation drop-offs, the April series is designed to increase participation during a time when environmental awareness is a focus.
Each Wednesday highlights a specific category, though all items are accepted throughout the month:
8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 1, clothing
8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 8, e-waste, including batteries and electronics
8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 15, household plastics
8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 22, linens
8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 29, shoes
Organizers said in an effort to encourage participation, one donor will be selected to receive a free three-day dumpster from Junk King Reno.
